Moving Scam, no Joke! Don’t get ripped off.

Besides getting your car fixed, moving is the second highest scam chance that I can think of. If your planning to move, then plan, don’t just choose the first company you interview or the best price you can find because the amount that it can cost you in the end could be devastating.

Step One: Find a reputable company by searching reviews and read them carefully to make sure they did not write them or pay to have them written. Review sites are tricky, try out Angie’s list and BBB for starters. Next look for a license, if the company is legal they will have at least a state regulated movers license and if your move crosses state lines a DOT number that can be checked at www.safersys.org.

Step Two: Ask the company for a “do not exceed price” also known as a binding contract (not binding estimate). Make sure the company will guarantee that the price is what they estimate and cannot go any higher for any reason. Make sure you get that in writing and maybe even on a recorded phone call. Many companies offer a price that can fluctuate based on weight or cubic feet and this is exactly how so many people end up feeling ripped off.

Step Three: Make sure the company can give you a guaranteed pick up and drop off date. This will ensure that you are the priority and not the profit of the move. Many companies won;t even tell you about a 7 day pick up and drop off window. There could be many hidden charges that involve storage and delivery especially when they have a semi involved and have to use a smaller truck to shuttle the items over, these are factors to consider.

Step Four: Put down as little money as possible. A good company will take ZERO for a deposit on a small local move, and sometimes as little as 5% on a long distance move. DO NOT PAY the full amount until things begin to unload into the new home. If the mover tries to raise the price and hold your things ransom demanding a different amount than the contract then CALL THE COPS, call AMSA, call everyone and let them know that you are being scammed. Too many people get caught up in the moment and negotiate the scam and still end up scammed. Follow the truck, alert authorities and keep calm. Companies cannot legally kidnap your items, they must deliver your items then take you to court if there is a payment dispute.

Step Five: Keep an eye on your stuff during the entire move process! Watch the movers prep, pack, and load your stuff onto a truck. If possible follow the truck, we recommend hiring an exclusive move type company that will take your stuff from point A to point B without putting other families on the same truck. Then finally watch the movers unload and set up your furniture. This way if anything happens, like they drop your dining room table during the move you can say for certain how and when it happened if there was a claim.

How to SPY on your moving truck

If you have to hire a moving company we recommend that you first hire an exclusive move company… This usually means that the company will take your stuff from point A strait to point B with no other families sharing the same truck. If you choose a van line type company you probably won’t be able to spy on your load because they will head in another direction to load more families on the truck, typically this increases the risk when moving.

moving truck

Spying on your truck is only one of the many reasons to hire exclusive movers but we can cover that topic another time. When talking with your mover during the booking process. Find out how they will plan the trip. For example if you are moving from Illinois to Florida the move coordinator might tell you something like this: “On day 1 we will load the truck, day two drive to TN and day three finish the trip to FL and unload on the following morning. That should be enough information to SPY on your truck during the move.

When the team comes to load your truck, Ask them where they will stay after they load the truck and what time they will leave. If you are driving to the destination you can be there in the morning to begin to follow your moving truck. The movers can legally only drive 10 or 11 hours per day due to federal laws, this makes for an easy trip if you want to follow the truck. You can follow the movers right to a hotel in TN and chances are they will never even know you followed them. This is a good way to see if any accidents occur on the road, if the movers are driving carefully with your truck, and also to make sure they do not have a chance to unload any of your possessions in an attempt to steal something.  Finally this will put you in perfect timing to meet the team for them to unload into your destination as you arrive with them.

Start Moving is an exclusive move company, we complete our moves one client at a time from point A to point B and sometimes we spend the entire time bonding with our clients to create an amazing move experience enjoyable for both the movers and the clients.

TOP 3 EPIC MOVING DISASTERS

In this first video, what seems like a very easy move of a mini freezer suddenly takes a turn and the guy falls down the stairs while still holding on the entire time, my guess is that he is drunk or on drugs. The people in the background are lucky enough not to get hit by the sliding freezer.

This second video is a compilation of trucks running into a low bridge. The bridge claims almost every major brand of moving truck including Uhaul, Rider, and Penske. My question is, why the city never decided to raise the bridge and why are these trucks not slowing down to carefully navigate the roadway.

This last video is a typical case of accidentally forgetting to close the door to the moving truck before taking off. The guy’s reaction is hilarious. I am guessing it was family or friends driving the uhaul and that’s why he didn’t rip them a new one.

All of these disasters can easily be avoided. Moving can be one of the most stressful times in a lifetime, or it can be easy and painless. If you prefer an easy relaxing move experience, hire Start Moving because they are one of the highest rated moving companies available and they are licensed and insured to move you from any state to any state without any epic fails.

How to “investigate” your moving company in 2 easy steps.

investigate magnifying glass

You chose a mover and that’s great, but maybe you rushed the process and chose a company quickly or they were really nice on the phone and talked you into a deposit because they were smooth sales people. What’s important now is to make sure you chose a great company to work with and to make sure they have the proper license and insurance coverage to protect your move. If you have not yet chose a company, keep reading.

investigate magnifying glass

1) put the company name into a Google search. What you are looking for is review sites among the results. Sites that have reviews for your company (like yelp, Angie’s list, moving company reviews, and moving scam). Read as many reviews as you can find. This is the most important technique of investigating your moving company. If you find that the company no longer makes you feel safe, do not take any chances, find another company that meets your expectations.

2) Now that you have a company that has good enough reviews to make you feel safe, it is good to know that they are also organized and running a legal business. This means checking the license and insurance information, this information can also be useful if you need to file a claim and you would like to deal with the insurance company directly. Mover’s for local moves inside of their home state require the mover to obtain a state license, for movers in Florida you can go  HERE. Most moving companies also move people from one state to another, also known as interstate. These national companies must have a DOT number. You can visit www.safersys.org, scroll down to the bottom center of the page and click on company snapshot. Enter the DOT number and find your company. Now you will be able to navigate to see the insurance and license information as well as any complaints they might have had on the road with the department of transportation.

Hopefully this article will save people from massive headaches from dealing with bad movers.

Exclusive Moving Companies (VS) Van lines (VS) Moving Brokers, Who Wins?

6

Do I need an exclusive moving company, van line service or moving broker?

When it comes to moving companies, there are a few different levels of service offered in the moving industry and give you a few pointers on what to look out for that might save you from future stress or headaches.

When getting a quote for long distance moving companies you will find that you are not comparing apples to apples but instead, it’s comparing apples to broccoli or corn because there are many ways to get your stuff moved. You will choose between a low cost high risk of problems and delays companies, to somewhere in the middle with average risk and average cost, and then there is higher cost but extremely low risk companies which is where we consider ourselves on the spectrum.

Low cost high risk options:

Companies here are often van-liners, moving or freight brokers posing as movers or van-liners, ABF or similar freight trailers dropped off and loaded by your choice of load and unload companies, Unlicensed movers, or movers that just are licensed inside your state but not licensed to go out of state and they might even be using uhaul trucks. Also in this category is moving your own furniture, not that you are not capable of doing it but there is just a lot of risk behind it.

www.startmovingme.com

Risks associated with these options are not limited to: Price fluctuation based on weight and cubic feet, they might come in and survey the home then give you one of these types of estimates however they do not guarantee the rate and chances are it will come out to be a big surprise when they get to your destination and demand much more money than they told you in the first place because after they loaded you up they put you on a scale to determine that the estimate was off by a few thousand pounds and dollars. Delays in pickup and delivery. Delays are caused by multiple families being placed on one truck or trailer. If a truck is scheduled to pick up your furniture and the driver has one little issue along many stops it will cause your move to be delayed up to 7 days in some instances and most of the time this is a big problem when you have a tight schedule. Placing your items with other families in the same truck also means there is more risk for damages because they squeeze the items from floor to ceiling and the ceiling is so high allowing too much pressure on the items stacked at the bottom of each tier. Another issue with this is the load boards that hold your stuff up can litterally just fall down after the family ahead of you has their items removed causing your items to fall over and smash on the floor as we have seen happen many times. Unlicensed or improperly licensed companies is probably the most risky situation to get yourself into because we have heard so many stories from past clients that have had their items held for ransom or worse loaded up and never to be seen again and not having enough information on the people who did it to even attempt to prosecute or get their stuff back. Keep in mind that some of these companies are constantly using temporary labor or have employees that are just not dealing with people the way we want to be dealt with. Finally we have the do it your self option. Possible risks here include serious injury due to improper lifting technique that could put people out of work for weeks. Driving equipment that you are not used to could lead to a major accident, lack of moving knowledge easily leads to damaged furniture often to the effect of costing more than it would have to hire professionals. Sometimes the move process may even take 2 or 3 times longer when moving your own items and sometimes the cost of the equipment and fuel is much higher than anticipated and you really aren’t saving much money after all.

Average Risk and Average Cost Companies:

In this category you may find that the van-liner company, broker, or licensed household movers are dealing professionally, have mostly good reviews but still quite a few bad ones related to price or quality, and they get the job done on time most of the time with average moderately skilled employees in a high turnover industry that actually are employees of the company you have chosen some with good attitudes and some you might not care for much. The problem here is that 20 percent of moves with companies in this category are followed with a claim for damages or a bad review for quality of service or price fluctuation. That is the national average unfortunately for getting a less than stress free experience.

Higher Cost and Extremely Low Risk Companies:

Here you will find the select few companies that you should work with to complete your move. Usually it makes sense on a situation like trusting your entire estate to another person or company that you would choose to pay a little bit extra to a company that has a higher cost of doing business in a model that was built to make nothing but satisfied customers. Usually you will only find one type of moving company here and that is a household moving company that meets the following criteria… They offer a guaranteed flat rate price from the beginning that they will stick to until the job is complete. The price is determined by the box truck size that your move requires and usually you get unlimited labor and space on that truck because they will handle just one client at a time going one way. They use box trucks to minimize damage because they tend to have good suspension and a interior height that won’t allow too much pressure on the items that go on the bottom of each tier, the trucks can also get in or out of just about any storage, home, or apartment complex without the need of a smaller truck to transport things to the final destination. This one customer at a time approach allows the company to guarantee a pickup and drop off date. These excellent companies are also using their own two or three professional movers from beginning to end on your move allowing easy communication and the ability to extend trust to them once you get to know them during the start of the process. The movers should be very friendly and knowledgeable and they will take pride in giving you the service you deserve. When dealing with the office you will get professional and friendly attitudes that give you the right vibe to move forward with them. If there is any problems during your move, these companies take care of it right away, they take responsibility for mistakes and instead of placing blame elsewhere they will pay for the damaged item or make up lost time one way or another.

www.startmovingme.com
How you find these companies will just take a little bit of work on your end to search for reputable reviews found on angies list, bbb, yelp, and google. Then once you find a company with great reviews you can check to see they have a DOT and MC number that allows them to operate as out of state (interstate) movers. You can go to safersys.org to type in these numbers and see insurance ratings and to make sure they have active insurance coverage if anything were to go wrong.
